The first ASIST Suicide Prevention Workshop to learn life-saving suicide prevention skills was held at CGHS last week.
The ASIST workshop is open to everyone 16 years or older and is widely used by both professionals and the general public, offering something for every participant, no matter how experienced.
The two-day workshop at CGHS, attendedby 16 participants from Allied Health, Nursing and Care Coordination, was the first of many workshops planned, the next on November 18-19.
ASIST facilitators were Joan Kemp and Sue Martin, who said participants found the course to be “a great tool”.
“It was very informative and left them more prepared to support a person at risk of suicide whether it was a work or personal role they were involved in,” Sue said.
Director of Nursing and Clinical Support Services Denise McInnes opened the first workshop which outlined and supported the aims and goals of ASIST. She encouraged staff to inform colleagues of future workshops and be involved.
The cost of each workshop across the region is usually $275 per person but to support staff involvement, and to better prepare and support staff with suicide intervention, CGHS has subsidised the costs, reducing the fee to $80 per person with catering being offered.
The workshop features:
- Presentations and guidance from two Living Works registered trainers
- A scientifically proven intervention model
- Powerful audiovisual learning aids
- Group discussions
- Skills practice and development
- A balance of challenge and safety
During the two-day interactive session, participants learn to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide.
More than 1,000,000 people have taken the workshop with studies having proven that the ASIST method helps reduce suicidal feelings for those at risk.
The next workshop is on Wednesday and Thursday November 18 and 19 from 8.30am to 4.30pm both days and both Joan and Sue are looking forward to seeing as many staff as possible attend.
