The new Stretton Park walking group has won praise from a Commonwealth Aged Care Standards team.
The team made an “unannounced visit” to the facility as part of the assessment of aged care standards.
Following the visit, the team highlighted the walking group initiative as having a particularly positive effect on the health and wellbeing of residents.
Care Coordinator Sally Weatherly said the well-attended walking group was introduced as part of Stretton Park’s continuous improvement plan. It meets twice daily – morning and afternoon.
“We have a number of residents who are keen to participate,” Sally said. “They are assisted and supervised by the diversional therapist to walk around the block. Residents in wheelchairs are encouraged to participate with staff assisting them so everyone has the opportunity to join in
CGHS Director of Residential Aged Care, Wayne Sullivan, said regular exercise was beneficial for everyone.
“We have noticed the walking group assists with maintaining optimal levels of mobility, it helps with weight management and it can assist with emotional wellbeing for our residents,” Wayne said. “It’s a highlight of the day for many of our residents.”
